A tour to delight enthusiasts and partners alike, who appreciate the unique history of these railways along with the gentle pace of the tour allowing ample time to enjoy the relaxing café culture, local drink and cuisine in the delightful seaside resort of St Valéry or even take a break from the steam and enjoy a full day sightseeing in Paris. In the evenings take time to visit Amiens’ beautiful cathedral and enjoy local drink and cuisine in restaurants idyllically set on the banks of the Somme. Following Amiens, we travel to equally delightful Orléans which is situated on the banks of the River Loire. Orléans has a magnificent medieval cathedral, attractive city square and a modern tram system.

We depart London St. Pancras International by a lunchtime Eurostar to France and by local train service to Amiens where we stay for three nights at the Campanile Amiens Centre Gare, close to the station with numerous bars and restaurants nearby and along the banks of the River Somme. Each evening is free for you to explore and to dine at leisure at a restaurant of your choice, or to join your Tour Manager at our choice of typical French restaurants (not included in tour fare).

After breakfast we travel by local train to Noyelles to enjoy a day on the beautifully rural and rustic Baie de Somme railway. We journey on all lines by steam apart from the Cayeux branch which is diesel. In addition to the fabulous steam railway itself the railway's coastal resort of St Valery is a delightful resort famed for its local restaurants and the local speciality - mussels.

Today we travel steam hauled on the 2ft gauge Froissy-Cappy-Dompierre railway to attend their steam gala. This former First World War line runs alongside the Somme Canal and is now a popular tourist line with an excellent railway museum and features roadside and canal-side running, a switchback and a tunnel. Many locomotives will be in steam offering passenger rides and demonstration freight runs. Also, in steam will be the 7.25" miniature line plus model displays in the museum. As there is so much going on, we are including a sandwich lunch.

B, L

Our day commences with the first private steam photo charter at the new MTVS (Musée des tramways à vapeur) line at Crevecoeur. This is a metre gauge line which the society has built on a section of trackbed of the former cross county line from Saint-Omer-en-Chaussée to Amiens. The newly laid metre gauge line recreates the atmosphere of the rural narrow gauge lines which once criss-crossed the French countryside. From rural narrow gauge line to an urban narrow gauge line, our coach takes us to the Chanteraines Park Narrow Gauge Railway in the suburbs of Paris. The railway will be running a diesel hauled service for the general public and we've chartered a steam train and will also have a guided tour of the engine sheds and workshops. This evening we transfer to Etampes where we take the train to Orleans and our hotel for the next three nights, the Ibis Orléans Centre Foch Hotel.

We have a free morning in delightful Orléans you may wish to ride the modern tramway which opened in 2000 or visit the magnificent medieval cathedral and at attractive city square. We travel by road to Pithiviers where we visit the "Musée des Transports" and a private steam charter on the 60cm Gauge Line to Bellebat. This is the preserved section of the Tramway de Pithiviers á Toury a narrow gauge roadside tramway which once ran from Pithiviers to Toury.

We commence our day by taking the train to Salbris where we change to the narrow gauge line traveling on a diesel rail car to Valençay. At Valençay we board a private coach for the short journey to Écueillé for a steam hauled charter on the Le Train du Bas Berry metre gauge Line to Argy and return. The railway recreates the atmosphere of the narrow gauge lines which were once so common across rural France. We then continue by road coach back to Orléans.

Our final day taking the mainline train to Paris and the Eurostar back to London St Pancras International.
