Depart London by Eurostar 08.54 hrs* to Brussels and speeding onwards aboard the ICE train services to Linz arriving 21.36 hrs* having changed trains just the once at Frankfurt. At Linz we have one night at the Kolping hotel. Due to the late arrival time it is too late to dine at the hotel and suggest you dine during the journey in the restaurant aboard the ICE train.

This morning we travel on a main line service to St Polten. Here we board the scheduled modern unit 760 mm train service along the beautiful, 100 kms long, Mariazellerbahn travelling through the picturesque valleys to Laubenbachmühle before climbing via a double horse-shoe curve off into the mountains - a truly scenic journey climbing to Mariazell. After transferring to our hotel, we have an afternoon trip on the steam tramway up to the lake. The rest of the day is free to explore this beautiful mountain resort.

We travel by coach through the mountains to Mürzzuschlag where we visit the railway museum before taking the train over the stunningly scenic and UNESCO protected Semmering Pass to Payerbach-Reichenau station where there is a plinthed steam locomotive that used to work over the Semmering line. Here we join the vintage electric 760 mm narrow gauge line to Hirschwang and return. Back at Payerbach we continue by train changing at Vienna Neustadt for the onward journey to Sopron in Hungary where there is another plinthed steam locomotive. A coach transfer takes us to the Hotel Sopron.

We begin the day with a guided tour of Sopron, you'll be able to climb the historic fire tower for fine views over the city. Our coach will then take us to Nagycenk where we enjoy a steam charter on the 2 miles long 760 mm gauge Nagycenki Széchenyi Museum Railway between Nagycenk and Fertöboz and return. There are various steam locomotives on display at both ends of the line. Our coach then takes us to Badacsony on the banks of Lake Balaton where we stay for the next two nights at our hotel that is conveniently located for the lake and promenade.

Today we enjoy a tour of Lake Balaton via coach, train and boat including free time in picturesque Tihany and Siófok. From Siófok we travel by train for approximately 30 miles along the southern shore of beautiful Lake Balaton to Balaton Fenyves where we take a return trip on the last narrow-gauge railway to still be part of the Hungarian State Railways to Somogyszentpál. We complete our day returning by ferry to Badacsony.

This morning we visit the large model railway at Keszthely featuring a HO gauge layout of the Semmering Pass amongst other German & Hungarian layouts. We then continue to Mesztegnyö by road for a vintage diesel charter on the Narrow Gauge Mesztegnyöi Forest Railway. We then check into our hotel in Zalaegerszeg for the next two nights.

Today we enjoy a full day of steam on the extensive Zala Forestry Narrow Gauge Railway Network which is the largest narrow-gauge system in Hungary. This industrial line is used for the extraction of timber. A packed lunch is included.

B, L

After a free morning n Zalaegerszeg we depart Hungary on the Cittadella train to Ljubljana the capital of Slovenia. The rail journey to Ljubljana sees the countryside become ever more mountainous and ever more scenic. There are a number of plinthed steam locos to be glimpsed during the journey. On arrival at Ljubljana we transfer to the railway museum which has a fine collection of Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslavian steam locos. Our coach then takes us to our hotel at Bohinjska in the Julian Alps where we stay for the next two nights.

This morning we travel by coach to Jesenice where we enjoy one of the highlights of the tour as we board a 90 Kms main line steam excursion over the extensive Bohinj Line to Nova Gorica and return. We'll travel through spectacular scenery and over the largest stone arch bridge in Europe. On arrival at Nova Gorica, we have a break of approximately 3 hours in which you might like to walk across the border into Italy and the old town of Gorizia.
